This Hole in the Wall in Koreatown Is the Only True Mongolian BBQ Spot in L.A. Doing Stone-Cooked BBQ Lamb

This Hole in the Wall in Koreatown Is the Only True Mongolian BBQ Spot in L.A. Doing Stone-Cooked BBQ Lamb Real Mongolian BBQ isn’t what you think. Real Mongolian BBQ is eating big chunks of lamb with your fingers. It’s not those greasy noodles fried on a wide flat grill at any number of Chinese restaurants around Los Angeles, an idea originally concocted in Taiwan to sell Japanese food. The Mongolian BBQ I’m talking about is Khorkhog, pronounced something close to “whore-hog.” That’s right, Whore Hog. The sound of it just screams meat-loving nomads camping out on the windswept Central Asian Steppe. It’s the farthest thing from stir fry, and there is only one place in Los Angeles to get khorkhog, traditional Mongolian food – or any Mongolian food, for that matter –  Golden Mongolian Restaurant  in Koreatown. Golden Mongolian in Korea Town is the only authentic Mongolian Restaurant in Los Angeles. Photos by Philip Iglauer. Golden Mongolian is ...

Deputy Serves Elderly Couple With Notice ~ Heartless Eviction Continue at Westlake Building Where Tenants Staged Strike

Deputy Serves Elderly Couple With Notice ~ Heartless Eviction Continue at Westlake Building Where Tenants Staged Strike An elderly couple at the embattled Burlington apartments has less than five days to relocate after being evicted Thursday by  L.A. Sheriff's deputies. Though Burlington Unidos decided on Monday to  halt its six-month rent strike  at the Burlington Avenue Apartments in Westlake, their two most elderly members are now facing eviction by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The building looks decent enough on the outside, but as L.A. Taco has reported, the complex is festering with slumlord conditions. The landlord is increasing rents by more than 40 percent, which prompted residents to go on strike. Around 7am Thursday morning, a deputy knocked on the door of Robert Rodriguez, 82, and his wife Maria, who is in her late 70s. In June, the pair lost a  civil eviction case  filed against their unit for non-paymen...

5 powerful pillars for a creating a life of happiness.

Hi , We are all seeking one thing. Happiness . But I am not talking about those fleeting moments of happiness that we all have but a foundation and sense of well being that transcends momentary joy. We know when we feel those joyful moments. A completed task. Experiencing a beautiful sunrise. A goal achieved. Having your work affirmed. A time spent with friends connecting and laughing. But joy can be fleeting. The darkness But for many once that fleeting moment is past, familiar feelings of dread show up. Anxiety emerges. Reality creeps in. Often it turns up as we awake. In darkness. Fears both real and imagined knock on our front door. Debilitating and demotivating. Fears about money, relationships and life that challenge our security. George Harrison sums up what many of us have felt as we move through life in those dark moments in his song "Beware of Darkness" "Watch out now, take care. Beware of the thoughts that linger. Win...

Highlights from the Rogue 99 ~ Hawkins House of Burgers

Image
Highlights from the Rogue 99 ~ Hawkins House of Burgers Of all the burger joints in Los Angeles, few are more beloved or more respected than Hawkins House of Burgers, where Cynthia Hawkins has presiding over the grill and making some of the finest classic roadside burgers in the city for decades. Here Angus beef patties are seasoned and loosely formed before they’re smacked onto a hot hot griddle to sear and then topped with mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, a slice of cheese, fresh, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. It’s pretty much all you would want in a burger, but if you’re especially ambitious, Hawkins’ most famous item probably is the Whipper, which takes that classic burger and amps it up with an additional patty, two slices of cheese, a hot link, and a pile of pastrami. Whether you go minimalist or maximialist, Hawkins House of Burgers isn’t so much a house for burgers. It’s a temple. 11603 Slater St., Watts (323) 563-1129 http://www.hawkinsburgers.com READ THE ...

How Police Broke Down the Occupy ICE Encampment in Downtown L.A.

Image
How Police Broke Down the Occupy ICE Encampment in Downtown L.A. The first signal came with the uniformed federal officers and plain-clothes agents surrounded the beat-up camping tent on the sidewalk outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles Friday afternoon. A federal police vehicle was parked next to the sidewalk and agents demanded the inhabitant come out. There was a pause, and a voice spoke back but was lost in the sound of the nearby freeway traffic. Slowly the zipper opened from the inside of the tent and a man stepped out in shorts and a white shirt. He was barefoot. Frederick Murphy was immediately arrested by the officers who patted him down, with blue nylon gloves. They handcuffed him as they announced — loudly — that there was a warrant for his arrest. One man held up a phone and asked the uniformed officers why Murphy was being taken away, but none of them answered. Murphy’s arrest was the fourth at the camp in the previous five ...

Good Shots

Today's guest picture comes from Andy Little, one of our camera club members.  He very kindly sent me this picture of an unusual bird which he saw when visiting New Lanark. I had a steadily busy but not frantic day today.  Encouraged by Mrs Tootlepedal, I got up reasonably early and went out for a bike ride after breakfast without even pausing to look round the garden. The reason for the snappy start was a dire forecast of wind and rain to come later in the day.  Anxious not to be caught out, I pedalled the whole way round my 20 mile Canonbie circuit without stopping at all, most unusual for me.  As a result there are no pictures but I made up for this by looking round the garden when I got home. The butterflies have slowed down a bit and I was able to take a few close up shots. It may not be the bee's knees but it definitely is the butterfly's proboscis. There was a lot of nectar quaffing going on. This shot does include the bee's knees. ...
